Pet sitter or boarding: which is better?

Side by side · for dogs and cats · hiring checklist

Quick answer

Is a pet sitter or boarding better?

A pet sitter suits cats, older or anxious pets and homes with several pets, because they stay in familiar surroundings. Boarding suits social dogs that enjoy company and need someone with them all day. For a dog, a sitter means several visits a day or an overnight stay; for a cat, one or two visits a day is usually enough.

Checklist: hiring a pet sitter

  1. Meet first. Have the sitter visit while you are home and watch how your pet reacts.
  2. Check identity and references, and how long they have cared for pets.
  3. Write down the routine: food and amounts, walks, litter, medicines, hiding places and habits.
  4. Agree how often they visit, how long they stay and how they will send updates.
  5. Leave emergency details: your vet, the nearest 24-hour hospital, and permission to get treatment if you cannot be reached.
  6. Plan keys and access, and tell building security or neighbours who will be coming in.

Frequently asked questions

Are cats better with a pet sitter than boarding?

Usually, yes. Most cats are attached to their territory and find a new place stressful, so a sitter who visits keeps them calmer. Boarding can suit cats that travel well, or that need medical care a sitter cannot give.

How often should a pet sitter visit a cat?

At least once a day, and twice is better: to feed, refresh water, clean the litter tray and check the cat is well. A cat should never be left alone for days with only a bowl of food.

How often should a pet sitter visit a dog?

Dogs need company and toilet breaks several times a day. Plan at least three visits a day with walks, or a sitter who stays overnight. For long workdays, daycare or boarding may suit a dog better.

Is boarding stressful for dogs?

Some dogs love the company and play; others, especially older or anxious dogs, find it stressful. A trial night shows you which kind your dog is.
