Dog boarding checklist: how to choose a safe boarding

What to check · vaccines · what to pack

Quick answer

How do I choose a safe dog boarding?

Visit before you book and see where dogs sleep and play. Ask how many dogs one person looks after, whether someone stays overnight, which vaccines they require and which vet they call in an emergency. A good boarding asks you questions too, about vaccines, food, health and temperament. Book a trial day or night before a long trip.

Checklist: choosing a dog boarding or daycare

  1. Visit before you book. See where dogs sleep, eat and play. Look for clean floors, secure fencing, shade, water and good airflow: heat is a real risk in summer.
  2. Staff. Ask how many dogs one person looks after, and whether someone stays overnight.
  3. Vaccination proof for every dog. A boarding that checks every guest's vaccines is protecting yours.
  4. Emergency plan. Ask which vet they use, how fast they can get there, and how they will reach you.
  5. Grouping. Dogs should be grouped by size and temperament, and cats kept away from dogs.
  6. Food and medicines. Ask if you can bring your dog's own food, and whether they give medicines at set times.
  7. Updates. Many boardings send photos or videos every day. Ask before you book.
  8. Price in writing. Check what is included (walks, play time, grooming, pick-up and drop) and what costs extra.
  9. A trial first. Book a day of daycare or one night before a long trip.

What to pack

  • Your dog's usual food for the whole stay, plus a little extra.
  • Medicines, with the dose and times written down.
  • Vaccination record, your phone number and your vet's number.
  • A familiar blanket or toy that smells of home.
  • Leash and collar with an ID tag.

Questions a good boarding asks you

Expect questions about vaccines, food, health problems, how your dog behaves with other dogs and people, and who to call in an emergency. A boarding that asks nothing about your dog is a warning sign.

Frequently asked questions

What vaccinations does my dog need for boarding?

Most boardings ask for proof of up-to-date core vaccines (distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus) and rabies. Many also ask for the kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine some days before the stay. Check with the boarding early, and ask your vet about timing.

Is home boarding better than a kennel?

Home boarding, where a sitter keeps a few dogs in their home, suits anxious dogs and dogs that do not enjoy other dogs. A boarding facility suits social dogs and often has more staff and space. Either way, visit first and book a trial.

How do I prepare my dog for its first boarding stay?

Book a trial day or night, keep its usual food, make sure vaccines are up to date, pack a familiar blanket or toy and keep the goodbye short and calm. Most dogs settle within a day or two.

Can I board a puppy?

Usually only once its puppy vaccine course is complete and your vet says it is protected, which is often from about 4 months. Ask the boarding for its minimum age.
